Be Symptom Aware

What are the Symptoms of Primary Bone Cancers?

  • Bone pain; this has been described as toothache-like pain; it may come and go at first then become more persistent, especially at night.
  • A swelling; this can be seen if a tumour is on a bone near the surface of the body but in other places, like on the pelvis, it may not be visible.
  • Reduced movement of a joint, or a limp.

What Should I do if the Symptoms Persist?

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued guidelines for General Practitioners (GPs) to follow if they suspect a diagnosis of primary bone cancer (bone sarcoma). It is important to remember that bone cancer is very rare and symptoms like these often have other causes. However, when symptoms persist, it is a good idea to ask your doctor for an x-ray, which is a simple and effective way of detecting bone tumours.
