Call for Clinical or Scientific Research Fellowship Applications

Research Objective

BCRT supports research to improve outcomes in primary bone cancer patients, in particular osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma. We are keen to support work leading to improved understanding of the aetiology and pathogenesis of these cancers, and improved methods for early diagnosis, management and successful treatment.

This BCRT Research Fellowship scheme is for individuals committed to a career in academic clinically related research in bone cancers. Successful applicants would be expected to register for a higher degree (PhD or MD) at the host institution. This fellowship scheme takes the form of a project grant of up to four years in length providing salary support to pursue a specific clearly described piece of research in collaboration with a recognised researcher in the field.

Joint applications are expected from supervisors and candidates. In addition to the project aims and plan of work, the application should also describe the training programme, facilities and experience of the host laboratory.

Applications

Applications will be considered from either -

  1. Candidates who wish to undertake this research fellowship themselves. . These candidates will be expected to have the strong support of their group leader /supervisor at their host institution and will be considered on the basis of their academic achievements and potential. Applications should include a full proposal using the BCRT Research Fellowship Application Form and full CVs for both candidate and supervisor.

    Candidates from a clinical background should have a minimum 36 months post-graduate experience following their first clinical (or equivalent) qualification and should have completed general professional training as defined by the relevant college.

  2. Group Leaders / Proposed supervisors proposing research projects in the field of bone cancer and in-line with the goals of BCRT.. It is expected that the successful applicant will appoint a research fellow (clinical or scientific) of the highest calibre who will register for a PhD or MD (with the applicant as primary supervisor). Applications should include a full proposal using the BCRT Research Fellowship Application Form and full CV of all applicants.

    Supervisors must have a confirmed position within the host institution covering the full period of the award and are expected to have a sustained track record of successful grant awards and student supervision; details of which should be included in the application.

The fellowship covers full-time salary costs for the Fellow, consumable expenses and an allowance for travel to attend scientific meetings, including the annual BCRT conference at which the fellow is expected to present.

Funding available for scientific PhD post is up to £150,000.
Funding available for MD post is up to £225,000.

The fellowship is subject to the BCRT Fellowship Conditions. The Fellowships may be held at any recognised UK or Republic of Ireland University, hospital or research institution; evidence that the institution will host this post must be provided within the application. The Host Institution must be able to provide facilities and equipment as expected within a high quality research environment. All candidates must be resident in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

Short listing: January 2015
(Note: All applications are sent for full External Peer Review, and then assigned scores by the reviewers. The top scoring fellowship applications are then short-listed and applicants invited for interview.)
