Primary Bone Cancer
These bone cancers occur most commonly in young people.
OSTEOSARCOMA: has a peak age between 15 – 20 years although it can also occur in young children and older adults.
EWING’S SARCOMA has a wider age range, typically between 10 – 20 years old, although it can also arise in very young children or older adults.
How are young people affected?
Around 400 young people develop bone cancer each year in the UK. Current treatment depends on the intensive use of chemotherapy, surgery and in some cases radiation therapy. Treatment can extend over many months and, whilst many patients now survive, many do not. Currently, the survival rate for OSTEOSARCOMA is some 55% at 5 years and that for EWING’S SARCOMA is around 60% at 5 years.
