Run, Row, Bike, Climb – Birmingham to Paris challenge – Date TBA
West Midlands Fire Service Crew Commander, Seb Coe, and eight of his colleagues are taking on a gruelling challenge on September 10th & 11th 2009, a very important day in which they remember their colleagues in New York. Starting at 4pm on Thursday 10th and aiming to finish by 4pm on Friday 11th, they will be using state of the art fitness equipment supplied by LA Fitness Gym to complete the challenge. Three firefighters at a time will run on static machines from Birmingham to Dover, covering 203 miles, changing as many times as they like between the nine firefighters until they have completed the distance. They will then move onto rowing machines to cover the 30 miles between Dover and Calais, before getting on cycling machines to cover the 184 miles between Calais and Paris. If that wasn’t enough, they will then use a fire service wall climber to climb the equivalent to the Eiffel Tower, around 1000ft! The challenge will be taking place in Victoria Square in Birmingham, and any support that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated as they complete the challenge in support of Hannah Millington who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2007, and is now back at work in the West Midlands Police force, and a great supporter of BCRT and our work.
London to Rome Cycle Challenge – 10th-24th October 2009
Alec Bartlett, Charlie Pushman, Henry Hunt and Tom Bishop, four friends of Peter Franklin who is currently undergoing treatment for Ewing’s sarcoma, are taking on a mammoth challenge of cycling from Rome to London in two weeks! The four riders will be covering 1,262 miles, going through seven countries and aiming to raise over £10,000! You will be able to hear all about their challenge on their website.
Andy’s Angel Charity Race Series – Throughout 2009

Andy Greig was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in February 2008 at the age of 41 and has had his right knee replaced with a titanium one and has had six months of chemotherapy. This was followed in November, by the removal of secondary tumours in both lungs. Andy has just finished a course of radiotherapy and is feeling fit and well.
Andy’s Angels is a team of amateur runners, including Andy’s wife Sara and three daughters Amy, Hannah and Emily, his sister, and neighbours, and Stuart Pendred, a professional singer and actor who came up with the idea of running a series of races in 2009.
The first race in the series was on Saturday, 21 February. Stuart Pendred competed in the Saucony National Cross-Country Championships at Parliament Hill, London. Stuart was very happy with his time of 1:10:02 given the dreadful course conditions (see ‘post-run’ photos of Stuart’s BRAND NEW cross country spikes above!).
The second race in this multi-race series is the Milton Keynes Half Marathon on Sunday 8 March at the Open University, Milton Keynes.
The full list of races so far in the series can be found at grumpyoldgit.org.
