Despite the current situation, Lee Morris, one of our incredible supporters has continued to take on phenomenal challenges for The Rhodri Jones Memorial Fund. It seems it would take more than a pandemic to stop Lee!
Lee is incredibly committed to raising funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust and we’re so grateful that he’s chosen to support The Rhodri Jones Memorial Appeal again this year. Rhodri has been Lee's motivation for all of his challenges, after they went through cancer treatment together. Rhodri was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the same time as Lee received his diagnoses, but Rhodri sadly passed away only 7 months after his diagnosis, at just 20 years old.
Unfortunately due to the current situation, Lee's planned fundraising challenge of 2020, completing six ultra-marathons, has had to be postponed. He managed to complete the Chester 50mile marathon in February, but the others have been cancelled for the time being. However, this was not going to stop Lee!
Instead of the annual Rhodri Jones Beach 5k, Lee organised a COVID-19 friendly version; asking people to run, jog or walk 5k over a weekend and make a donation to BCRT. Lee worked tirelessly throughout the weekend and even drove all over Swansea to try to meet all the participants. On top of this, he even worked a night shift at his job in a hospital! The virtual fundraising weekend was extremely successful, raising both funds and awareness.
But he hasn’t stopped there...Lee then took on a mega challenge in August, attempting to run to all 4 Welsh Rugby Union stadiums – totally over 70 miles! Starting on the 14th of August at Rodney Parade, Newport, Lee ran to the Principality Stadium, Cardiff and then on to the Liberty Stadium, Swansea; arriving at 6am on Saturday. (That’s 15 hours non- stop!). He then completed his challenge by running to Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli, boosted by the love and support from his community. Lee completed his challenge successfully (despite getting lost in Cardiff!), running even further than an ultra-marathon - which definitely takes someone special to attempt!
Instead of taking a well-deserved rest, this super-human man took on his next challenge… Lee is now attempting to run 50 half marathons in 50 days, during September and October, totalling an incredible 655 miles! His daily route will take him through the local villages starting at Waunarlwydd, through to Gowerton and Penclawdd and back. Hopefully he won’t get lost this time! When we heard from Lee on the 18th of September, he told us he was 5 half marathons down and 65.5 miles in the bag. He also wanted to say a huge thank you to Rob Jones and Gareth Parry for the support during the last 2 half marathons. If you would like to join Lee for a run, please let him know via social media - he would really appreciate the company! Just 45 half marathons and 589.5 miles to go... What a phenomenal challenge he’s set himself, good luck Lee- everyone at#TeamBones is cheering you on!
