The Bone Cancer Research Trust is the leading catalyst for pioneering research that saves lives and improves outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our supporters, we are excited to announce the launch of our first ever Early Career Fellowship.
The Early Career Fellowship will provide a significant stepping stone in a researcher's career and hopefully mark the beginning of a long-term commitment to the field of primary bone cancer research.
Whilst we remain dedicated to supporting established primary bone cancer researchers, we are eager to nurture talented emerging researchers in the field. As of May 2021, we have funded the training of 9 PhD students, providing them with an opportunity to master specialist skills and lay the foundation for a career in primary bone cancer research. Now, we are ready to help a promising researcher take the next step on their journey by providing funding to develop their independence and explore their own research ideas.
This £500,000 Early Career Fellowship Grant is the first of its kind awarded by the Bone Cancer Research Trust and is part of our 2017-2022 £2.8 million Grant Programme.
The Fellowship is a personal award which will enable a talented primary bone cancer researcher to transition from a postdoctoral position as part of an existing research group to an independent principal investigator. It will ensure that the Fellow’s time is protected so they can focus on their own primary bone cancer research, shielded from other professional and teaching commitments. The successful Fellow will be supported for 5 years by the Fellowship which includes salary and research costs for a competitive primary bone cancer research project.
Dr Zoe Davison, Head of Research, Support & Information said:
As we continue to invest in pioneering research, it is also extremely important that we build long-standing foundations within the field of primary bone cancer research. This Early Career Fellowship is part of our commitment to deliver the next generation of world class, primary bone cancer researchers and will enable a budding investigator to fulfil long term career goals, with an aspiration and commitment to strengthening the UK’s primary bone cancer research community.
Our hope is that, in years to come, the successful applicant will look back on their Bone Cancer Research Trust Early Career Fellowship as a significant stepping stone in their research career that marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to the field of primary bone cancer research.
