Cycling a tremendous 44 miles in one day, family, friends, and the local community came together to raise funds in loving memory of Daniel Humphreys, who sadly lost his life to Ewing sarcoma just six days after his 25th birthday.
The Tour de Mumbles event, which took place on 20th July 2024 at Royal Oak, encompassed a 44-mile cycle ride from Kenfig Hill in Bridgend, Wales to Mumbles and back, followed by live music and a BBQ.
Daniel’s mum Helen, together with his family and friends, has raised an astounding £44,111 for Ewing sarcoma research, with the recent Tour de Mumbles having raised £3,146 for the Daniel Humphreys Tribute Fund — a Special Fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust.
Daniel’s mum, Helen, who set up The Daniel Humphreys Tribute Fund, said:
“I’m so proud of all our loved ones who completed the tenth annual bike ride in memory of my beautiful son, Daniel. We had an amazing turnout with 48 cyclists and the challenge was an amazing and incredible achievement by all, especially with the wet weather! I would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended the festivities afterwards and contributed towards vital Ewing sarcoma research so future patients do not have to suffer as Daniel suffered.”
Siobhan Cullen, Regional Relationship Manager at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, added:
“We rely on the kindness and dedication of people, like Daniel’s loved ones who provide us with continued support year-after-year to raise funds for vital research. We are so incredibly grateful for them for taking on this challenge in Daniel’s memory to offer hope to future patients. They are all truly amazing.”
Always a sporty child, Daniel loved to play football, joining the Kenfig Hill Puma’s from age 5. Just two years later, he developed sports asthma and always carried an asthma pump with him.
Daniel’s breathing worsened by Christmas Eve 2012, when he struggled to climb the stairs. Doctors initially suspected a punctured lung, but in March 2013, he was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma.
Daniel underwent 20 gruelling rounds of chemotherapy and 15 rounds of radiotherapy. Unfortunately, the high dose of radiotherapy he’d decided on resulted in pneumonia and put him in intensive care for 12 days. During this time, doctors found that his liver and kidneys had also been damaged, and his organs were slowly shutting down.
On 17th February 2014, Daniel passed away after spending much time surrounded by his work colleagues and friends who always made sure he was never alone.
His friends, family and the local community come together every year to honour Daniel’s wish of raising vital funds and awareness for Ewing sarcoma, in the hope that one day no one else will be affected.
